Adware/Spyware on a Mac?

November 29th, 2006

According to researchers they have found the first signs of adware/spyware on a Mac OS. Well I for one am tired of hearing some of my Mac friends tell me just how safe their OS is compared to Windows. I guess now we shall see.

Saturday Slowness

November 26th, 2006

I think today had to be the “I’m exhausted from yesterday” day…

Rather slow today. Had a computer to removed virus’s and spyware from and then had a few more come in that the customer is getting the beloved “blue screen of death” on. Other than that pretty nice day outside.

Working on alot of web designs to get them in place and also fine-tuning some of our already made sites.

New for Microsoft X-Box, Nintendo Wii, Sony

November 22nd, 2006

Video games from the ’70s and ’80s have gone digital and are enjoying new popularity.

Microsoft’s XBox Live Arcade lets users digitally download and own such games as Pac-Man, Frogger, and Galaga at about $5 for X-box 360 owners.

Nintendo’s Wii game system will be able to download older games such as Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt.

According to USA Today, if you have a PlayStation Portable you will soon be able to download (for a small fee) PS One games on a new Sony “emulator” that the company plans to introduce soon.

Junk E-Mail

November 11th, 2006

Lately there has been a rash of junk email people have been getting. If you log into your email and you notice the “subject line” saying something like:

Hi Pete
Hi Jane

or anything like that more than likely it is “junk mail” and can be deleted without being read. Your best bet is not to open these types of email. Hopefully your interenet service provider is doing their best to keep those types of email out of your account.

Symantec Antivirus virus removal service

October 30th, 2006

Got a call today from a potential new client for computer repair in Shelton, Connecticut.  Had used Symantec antivirus previously for several years but let it lapse.  Over the weekend he purchased the latest version and when he went to install it, it informed him that he had 18 infected files, including a trojan which would need to be cleaned first.  He contacted their support and they let him know that they would charge $70 to clean up the viruses and get their software up and running.
I am having a bit of difficulty understanding why the software is capable of detecting these viruses but will not clean them.  After all he did pay for their product; charging the end user to clean off existing viruses in order to use the product he just purchased from them sounds weak.
Just one more reason not to recommend Symantec.  I currently recommend AVG With Firewall by Grisoft.  It sells for $48.50 for two years of protection.  Twice the subscription length for the same price.

MySpace Phishing

October 27th, 2006

Looks like some MySpace users were victims to some Phishing attacks from another user. They were e-mailing other MySpace users and having them go to a fake page and log in with their username and password.

Searching For What?

October 27th, 2006

Pirates and sexy women will soon roam the streets, if online activity is any indicator.

“Pirate costumes” was the leading costume-specific search, while Tinkerbell, Wonder Woman, Jack Sparrow and Playboy bunnies also ranked among the top five in the four weeks ending Oct. 21, according to Hitwise, an online intelligence and metrics service.

Microsoft Finally Reveals Plans for Upgrades to Vista

October 26th, 2006

Microsoft officials have said they are on track for a release of Vista to volume license business customers in November, and to consumers in January 2007.

The new initiative, known as the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista and Microsoft Office Technology Guarantee program, will be in effect from October 26, 2006 to March 15, 2007 and will be managed in two different ways: by PC manufacturers where the operating system is preloaded, and by Microsoft from system builders.
