Diagnostic

November 30th, 2006

Had a customer yesterday that brought their computer into the store and they already had a diagnostic done at one of the “big” chains. They were told they needed to replace the power supply and motherboard. This was all based on a light blinking on the back of the power supply.

Of course upon looking it over decided to test the power supply (failed). Then tried another power supply and the next thing you know it booted up correctly.

Have to be careful on who checks your computer and what they tell you needs replacing. Something this easy almost cost the customer about $400 (the quote they received).

The Top 10 Worst Company URLs (unintentionally)

November 28th, 2006

These days an online presence is an absolute necessity for many businesses. It’s a good idea to show selected potential domain names to friends, family, colleagues, and even clients before launching. The following are legitimate companies with legitimate sites; perhaps the following “mistakes” could have been avoided:

1. ‘Who Represents’, a site where you can find the name of the agent that represents a celebrity:
www.whorepresents.com

2. Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where computer programmers can talk:
www.expertsexchange.com

3. Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island:
www.penisland.net

4. In need of therapy after reading these? Try Therapist Finder:
www.therapistfinder.com

5. Italian Power Generator company:
www.powergenitalia.com

6. Mole Station Native Nursery in New South Wales :
www.molestationnursery.com

7. Need computer software, try:
www.ipanywhere.com

8. Welcome to the First Cumming Methodist Church:
www.cummingfirst.com

9. Need an art designer, check out this wacky website:
www.speedofart.com

10. Want to holiday in Lake Tahoe? Try their brochure website:

Black Monday

November 27th, 2006

The day after Thanksgiving being “Black Friday” for retailers as is Monday to Online Shoppers being their “Black Monday”.

A reason for this could be that about 86% of Americans use the Internet at work so maybe they do not have their fill of shopping even though they are suppose to be back at work..

Saturday Slowness

November 26th, 2006

I think today had to be the “I’m exhausted from yesterday” day…

Rather slow today. Had a computer to removed virus’s and spyware from and then had a few more come in that the customer is getting the beloved “blue screen of death” on. Other than that pretty nice day outside.

Working on alot of web designs to get them in place and also fine-tuning some of our already made sites.

Instant messages can be tracked in several ways

November 22nd, 2006

It seems as though your words disappear forever when an instant messaging session is over. That’s not always so.

Your IM is not a safe refuge for private chatter. Companies and government agencies can monitor and log instant-messaging conversations conducted on company computers.

Google saves chat sessions automatically and they can be searched later. Users of Google Talk must disable the setting or choose “off the record” for sessions they don’t want saved.

Instant-messaging services such as AOL’s AIM, Yahoo’s Yahoo Messenger, and Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger don’t store conversations on their servers automatically. But they offer various tools for companies and individuals to log conversations.

Recent scandals demonstrate that instant messaging is not private.

Government-monitored IMs found inappropriate messages by a member of Congress, who then resigned. And IMs have figured in corporate scandals, as well.

Instant-messaging services are offering a host of new products and tools for tracking IMs. AIM Pro, a free version for individuals and businesses, automatically archives conversations and saves them for 14 days. The feature can be extended or turned off.

Microsoft’s Live Communications server, allows a company’s information technology department to log and search employee conversations, including those on IM services like Yahoo and AOL.

A study by the American Management Association and The ePolicy Institute shows that only 13 percent of companies now track and log instant messages. The crackdown, however, is starting to take effect. Two percent of employers have fired someone because of what they said.

About 26 percent of companies have fired someone for misuse of email.

New for Microsoft X-Box, Nintendo Wii, Sony

November 22nd, 2006

Video games from the ’70s and ’80s have gone digital and are enjoying new popularity.

Microsoft’s XBox Live Arcade lets users digitally download and own such games as Pac-Man, Frogger, and Galaga at about $5 for X-box 360 owners.

Nintendo’s Wii game system will be able to download older games such as Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt.

According to USA Today, if you have a PlayStation Portable you will soon be able to download (for a small fee) PS One games on a new Sony “emulator” that the company plans to introduce soon.

Windows Updates & IE 7

November 22nd, 2006

Had a few computers come in yesterday for the same problem. Seems to be a rash of customers with problems ranging from downloading Windows update to downloading IE 7. Looks like most of these problems are coming from the downloading starting and then for some reason it not finishing.

If you start to do a Windows update or download and install IE 7 you have to make sure you let it complete. It may even require a reboot of your computer when you are done. But, do not turn off your computer or anything else during this time.

Increase In Spam

November 20th, 2006

There is an article out pertaining to spam and the amount of it. According to stats in October 2005 there were 31 billion messages per day and now that figure has risen to 61 billiion messages per day.

So if you have seen an increase in SPAM you are not the only one. Spam is a massive market for the shady ones that do it and apparently they have a very good system in place.

Playstation….Is It Worth It?

November 20th, 2006

With the new Playstation out you just have to sit back and think to yourself  “is it worth it”. Obviously to these people it was. Two people shot another man while getting the new Playstation. What is so amazing if you look at the news this is not an isolated case. There are numerous news articles of this very thing happening all over the country.

Personally to me a Playstation or any other gaming device is not worth getting shot over.
